Having known Alexis for a long time (we often worked together when I played trumpet for a pretty meager living), it was a great pleasure for me to see Alexis recording in our studios. Alexis hadn't changed; he looked the same as ever, but his music had moved with the times.
Alexis seems to have the uncanny knack of finding new sounds, new songs, and an enthusiasm which is very hard to keep up with. In fact, he scares the life out of me the way he keeps on producing new things all the time. Whatever the size group Alexis work with, it sounds twice the size and the sound. Here is no exception.
On this particular session, Alexis worked with Danny Thompson, bass, and Terry Cox, drums and the three of them keep things swinging from the very first track right down to the run-out groove.
Each track has its own special excitement, from Danny Thompson's 'grumbling' bass on "2.19 BLUES", to Alexis' tremendous 'Instrumental vocal' on the title track, "I WONDER WHO".
The whole L.P. was recorded in two sessions (with time to spare) – no panics, no upsets, no tantrums, everyone had a ball – musicians, studio staff and yours truly.
